How-to make an embellished t-shirt scarf

I have been seeing embellished scarves everywhere at the moment and fancied buying one. On closer inspection of them however, I reckoned I might be able to make something similar myself. So I gave it a go.
I used an extra large purple (but looks blue in the photo) t-shirt, some rings from a cheap necklace I no longer wanted and a pendant I bought at a craft fair for £1.50.

Here is how to do it:
1) Cut 2 strips out of the t-shirt across the width. Cut down one side so that they open up.
2) You should now have 2 long rectangles each with one of the original side seams from the t-shirt.
3) Place right sides together and sew down one of the short sides. I used a 1cm seam allowance throughout.
4) Now open up and fold right sides together. It should be folded so that you are sewing along the edge of the long sides of the rectangles. Leave short sides open.
5) Now turn inside out (or right way round). You should have a long tube of fabric open at both ends. Pull the fabric through the rings/pendants. Then knot the ends of the fabric so none of the embellishments fall off. All finished.

  • If you don't have a t-shirt to cut up you could use an ordinary scarf to embellish.
  • No rings/pendants? How about using brooches? Or you could sew on some sequins, thread some beads onto elastic string and wrap around, or thread charms onto ribbon and tie on. So many possibilities!
